Rachel Mattair, Licensed Midwife

About Me
The best part of my vocation is that even after a decade of attending births, I am continually learning new things. No two births are the same, and just when I think I have things figured out, I am humbled and amazed by mothers, by babies, by the human body, by complex psychosomatic connections. I love getting to know mothers and families.
All of these gifts make sleepless nights and missing my family worthwhile.

I view motherhood as my primary vocation, and it is also the vocation that introduced me to midwifery. Midwives guided me through my first pregnancy, and I believe that all women deserve this comprehensive level of care. My first labor was lifechanging, and with the support of my husband I made the decision to start midwifery school. I spent 3.5 years in a homebirth apprenticeship, as well as a six-month stint at a busy birth center.

Following licensure, I have largely worked in the homebirth world. I have also taken a good amount of time off to focus on my family, which has since grown to five children and several pets. With each of my pregnancies, I have learned more about birthing autonomy, the intuitive connection between myself and my unborn babies, and trusting maternal intuition.

Several years ago I began a healing journey through which I have come to believe that most, if not all, physical problems are manifestations of underlying spiritual and emotional obstacles (or better said, areas for growth). I am committed to pursuing this path of healing wherever I am led, and in my midwifery care I always utilize this big picture approach as a framework for problem-solving. That being said, I am also committed to continuing education, new research, and evaluation of maternal and fetal risk factors based on concrete data. I am licensed by the North American Registry of Midwives and by the State of Texas to practice midwifery. I maintain my certification in adult CPR and neonatal resuscitation.

My free time is spent with my family, in the forest, reading about healing, and hand-sewing. Preferably all at the same time.
